Embracing Intimacy: Couples Boudoir Tips

Couples boudoir photography is a powerful way to capture passion and intimate connection between two people. To make the best out of the session, preparation is key!

  1. Choose the right photographer! Start with checking out their portfolio and testimonials, and then have a conversation with them! There has to be a vibe, a comfort level and an understanding of boundaries.
  2. Speaking of boundaries 😉 Everything needs to be discussed before the session: the level of intimacy, nudity, specific poses and themes.
  3. Outfits! It’s pretty simple for men – Start in a nice pair of jeans and button down top, and be ready to get down to your skivvies. Ladies, I have an entire blog post for this!
  4. Practice posing! During the session I’ll be guiding you into poses, but practice helps create that comfort level with your partner. Get in front of the mirror, or play out that imaginary movie scene in bed – What feels exciting, natural and flattering?
  5. Set the mood. Depending on the time of your session, you could go on a date before hand! Consider your session an extension of a magical night (or day) together 🙂
  6. Trust the process and have fun!! It’s going to feel awkward at first, but once you can break through the tension, you’ll love that you did this together!!

A word from Erin, the owner of Gambles Photography, about her couples boudoir session with her husband:

Soooo, this is my husband and I… We had both achieved major athletic accomplishments in September – He ran 2 half marathons and I hit a 10 minute plank at my gym (PS, if you need a gym rec, I’ve got you!) We decided to celebrate with a couples boudoir! It was a first for both of us, and super nerve racking, but so worth getting out of our comfort zone!

I’m not going to lie, I’m so self conscious about my body. My stretch marks, my mommy tummy, those bumps and glumps that I just can’t hide…. I have to wrap my mind around that this is my body NOW. I don’t work out to lose the weight, I work out to feel good about myself and to be healthy. I will never look the way I did in my 20s, and I’ll never look like this again – I have to celebrate the moment I’m in and be happy with what I’ve achieved!

All of the above can be said about a solo boudoir session, what’s the scoop on couples? Well, I feel like it brought us closer together! We were comrades in the awkwardness and had to push past it and focus on each other. Of course there’s a lot of trust with the photographer, but also with your partner – that reassurance that you’re in this together. Eventually you get over the fact that you’re practically naked in front of a camera and you just have fun with it! Plus, the photos are really nice to look back on time to time 😉

If you’re contemplating a boudoir, take the leap! If you’re debating a couples session, give it a go! This is your sign, and there’s no better time than now 🥰
