What To Wear For Group Photos

You’ve booked the shoot, chose the day and location, it’s a big occasion! Now, what do you wear? Read our guide for family photoshoot outfit ideas to achieve a cohesive look that doesn’t clash!

What To Wear To A Family Photoshoot

  • Colors, Patterns & Textures: Choose a color palette that includes neutrals with 1 or 2 pops of color. Play with patterns and textures: florals, lace, and plaid – BUT don’t put everyone in patterns or textures, using them sparingly.
  • Show Off Your Wardrobe: Vary the types of clothing: jeans, dresses, tights, skirts, etc. Layers can also add dimension to an outfit, especially fall and winter sessions. Oh, and don’t forget to accessorize. The right scarf, bow, or necklace will make an outfit!
  • Prepare: Lay everyone’s clothes out before the session – better yet, do a dress rehearsal! Do the outfits fit, clash or compliment?

What Not To Wear For Group Pictures

  • Find The Balance Between Bland And Over-Colored: Don’t match too much! The days of white polos and jeans on the beach are gone. On the other hand, it’s a “pop” of color for good reason. Don’t put everyone in vibrant colors and patterns, this will be too distracting! Similarly, avoid writing or logos on your tops.
  • Prioritize Your Comfort: Don’t wear clothing that is uncomfortable or doesn’t fit properly. And, since it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially with children… Bring more than 1 outfit to the session!!
